Literature Review and Overview of Relevant Practice

Introduction

In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in the number of individuals engaging with the guitar, both professionally and recreationally (Parker,2021). Regardless of whether the goal is to perform complex orchestral repertoire, improvise within a jazz context, or undertake studio work, the guitarist’s technical approach plays a critical role in shaping musical expression.

Although numerous educational resources exist—including method books, instructional materials, and online learning platforms—many of these emphasise the development of alternate picking as the primary technical foundation. While this approach can be effective for certain musical contexts, an overreliance on alternate picking may restrict expressive dynamics and limit harmonic possibilities due to inherent mechanical constraints within the technique (Fjellman - Wiklund & Chesky, 2006; Zaza, 2010).

More recently, a number of contemporary electric guitarists have begun developing highly advanced fingerstyle approaches influenced by classical guitar traditions. Notable examples include Matteo Mancuso and Andre Nieri, whose technical systems demonstrate increased agility when navigating complex intervallic material.

Despite these developments, the use of a plectrum remains the dominant technical approach in electric guitar performance. Consequently, plectrum-based technique forms the foundation of the Integrated Guitar Technique System (IGTS) developed as part of this research.

This chapter is divided into two primary sections:

  1. Literature Review – examining existing scholarly literature, instructional materials, and pedagogical approaches to contemporary guitar technique.

  2. Overview of Current Practice – analysing contemporary performance practices through selected case studies of influential guitarists.

The aim is to identify limitations within existing pedagogical models and to highlight areas where new technical frameworks may expand expressive and harmonic possibilities for the instrument.

 

Technical Method Books for Guitar

For many guitarists, method books represent the initial entry point into technical and theoretical development. These materials frequently provide exercises designed to develop dexterity, coordination, and improvisational vocabulary.

However, while some publications offer valuable technical insights, many promote standardised approaches that reiterate established conventions rather than expanding them (Vallejo,2020).

The current market contains thousands of guitar instruction books covering a wide range of genres and technical disciplines. Most of these resources focus heavily on alternate picking as the primary technical approach (Gilbert,1993; Leavitt, 2014; Petrucci, 2000). Prominent examples include instructional materials by:

  • Paul Gilbert

  • John Petrucci

  • William Leavitt

Academic research in this area has also tended to focus on alternate picking technique (Herbst, 2017; Davenport, 2008), while comparatively little literature addresses alternative right-hand systems such as sweep picking or hybrid approaches.

Even where sweep picking is discussed, the emphasis is typically placed on the development of speed rather than musicality or expressive phrasing (Gambale, 1988; Brooks,2018). Similarly, the topic of dynamic control in guitar performance remains relatively underexplored, with many instructional sources equating dynamics primarily with accenting individual notes rather than shaping entire melodic lines (Basener, 2012; Stetina, 1990).

A further characteristic of many traditional guitar method books is their strong emphasis on horizontal scale playing, often using scalar sequences as the primary vehicle for technical development. While effective within certain contexts, this approach encourages narrow melodic contours that may not fully exploit the harmonic possibilities of the instrument.

 

Mechanical Constraints in Standard Guitar Technique

The guitar is tuned primarily in fourths, with the exception of the interval between the G and B strings, which is tuned as a major third. This tuning system presents specific mechanical challenges when executing wide intervallic leaps across strings.

From a picking perspective, angular melodic movement often requires frequent string changes. For guitarists relying exclusively on alternate picking, this can result in increased right-hand movement and greater physical effort.

Sweep picking offers a potential alternative approach by allowing multiple notes across adjacent strings to be played using a single directional motion of the pick. This reduces the need for rapid directional changes and can facilitate the execution of more vertically oriented harmonic structures.

In this sense, sweep picking allows the guitar to access melodic and harmonic structures more commonly associated with instruments such as the piano or saxophone.

 

Speed Picking for Guitar

One influential instructional text in this field is Speed Picking for Lead Guitar by Troy Stetina (1990). This widely used method focuses heavily on the development of speed and dexterity through alternate picking exercises derived largely from classical scale patterns.

Although the book provides extensive exercises for alternate picking, discussion of other technical concepts—such as pick slanting, edge picking, or planting techniques—is relatively limited.

The typical exercises emphasise three-notes-per-string scale patterns performed with strict down-up alternate picking.

While this approach can be effective for short passages, sustained performance of rapid alternate-picked passages may lead to physical fatigue due to several factors:

  • repetitive motion within the picking hand

  • high-speed motor demands

  • muscular tension in the forearm and wrist

  • resistance differences between string gauges

  • continuous motion without opportunities for rest

Over extended durations, these factors can lead to increased tension in the picking hand. This tension may ultimately affect dynamic control and reduce the player's ability to shape musical phrases.

Guitarist Guthrie Govan notes that dynamic control largely depends on the interaction between the thumb and index finger holding the plectrum. Variations in grip pressure, pick angle, and pick slant all contribute to subtle changes in articulation and dynamic response.

 

Sweep Picking

An alternative approach to right-hand technique was developed extensively by Frank Gambale.

Gambale’s sweep-picking system enables guitarists to execute vertically oriented arpeggio structures with increased efficiency by allowing multiple notes to be played within a single directional motion of the pick.

This technique significantly reduces directional changes in the picking hand, which in turn decreases mechanical effort and promotes smoother articulation.

The principle behind this approach aligns with an idea articulated by Mick Goodrick in The Advancing Guitarist: the importance of efficient energy expenditure, meaning that a musician should apply only the amount of physical effort required to achieve the musical task.

This concept forms an important conceptual foundation for the Integrated Guitar Technique System, which seeks to minimise unnecessary movement while expanding the expressive and harmonic capabilities of the instrument.

 

Scholarly Literature and Instructional Texts

Academic research on guitar technique remains relatively limited compared with pedagogical literature.

One notable study by Andrew Russell Davenport (2008) examined the technical challenges faced by electric guitarists performing the 24 Caprices of Niccolò Paganini.

Davenport identifies a combination of alternate picking, sweep picking, and two-hand tapping as necessary techniques for performing this repertoire effectively. His analysis also introduces the concept of micro-techniques, small technical components that combine to form complex performance strategies.

This approach supports the idea that guitar technique may benefit from integrated systems combining multiple right-hand approaches rather than relying exclusively on a single method.

Further pedagogical influence can be found in the work of jazz educator Jerry Bergonzi. His Inside Improvisation series presents harmonic concepts designed for all instruments, including intervallic structures and harmonic sequences that often prove difficult to execute on guitar using conventional picking approaches.

The Integrated Guitar Technique System attempts to address this limitation by reconfiguring picking patterns to enable the performance of wider intervallic material.

Additional inspiration was drawn from the work of saxophonist and educator Bill Plake. His book The Vertical Saxophoneexplores intervallic improvisation across large register shifts. While designed for saxophone, many of these concepts proved valuable when adapted for guitar technique development.

 

Cognitive Approaches to Practice

In addition to mechanical technique, this research also considers cognitive strategies that influence musical development.

Metacognition—the process of reflecting on one's own learning strategies—has been shown to significantly enhance the effectiveness of practice. Research by music psychologists such as Gary McPherson highlights the importance of deliberate practice and goal-oriented learning.

Closely related is the concept of Flow, introduced by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Flow describes a state in which a performer’s skill level is optimally matched with the difficulty of the task being undertaken.

When applied to instrumental practice, this balance can enhance concentration, reduce frustration, and accelerate skill development.

Another relevant concept is kinesthesis, the body’s awareness of movement. Developing conscious awareness of muscular motion during practice can assist in establishing efficient motor pathways and preventing the reinforcement of inefficient techniques.

 

Marginal Gains in Musical Practice

The concept of marginal gains, widely associated with the success of the Great Britain Cycling Team, proposes that small incremental improvements across multiple areas of performance can produce significant overall progress.

Applied to musical practice, this principle suggests that refining numerous small technical elements—such as hand positioning, movement efficiency, and articulation—can collectively produce substantial improvements in performance ability.

Music performance psychologist Noa Kageyama has discussed similar ideas in relation to structured practice routines and performance preparation.

 

Audio-Visual Data Capture in Guitar Research

Recent technological developments have also contributed to new forms of technical analysis in guitar performance.

Research conducted at Pompeu Fabra University used motion-capture technology to study finger-string interaction in flamenco guitarists.

Using high-speed cameras and motion sensors, researchers were able to analyse the mechanics of picking movements in detail. Their findings suggested that each plucking action consists of three stages:

  1. preparation

  2. pressure

  3. release

Understanding these phases provides valuable insight into the mechanics underlying expressive control and articulation.

 

Overview of Current Practice

Case studies provide valuable insights into how contemporary musicians expand the technical possibilities of their instrument.

This section therefore examines the performance practices of three influential contemporary guitarists:

  • Matteo Mancuso

  • Andre Nieri

  • Oz Noy

These artists were selected due to the close alignment between their technical innovations and the research objectives of this study.

 

Cracking the Code

A significant recent development in the study of guitar technique is the work of Troy Grady and his educational platform Cracking the Code.

Grady’s research employs high-speed video analysis to examine the right-hand picking mechanics of virtuoso guitarists. His work has been particularly influential in identifying the concept of escape motion, a picking mechanic that allows the plectrum to move efficiently between strings.

Analysis of players such as:

  • Yngwie Malmsteen

  • John McLaughlin

  • Eric Johnson

revealed that many virtuoso guitarists naturally employ specific escape trajectories that allow them to avoid string collisions during rapid passages.

This research has helped demystify high-speed picking technique and has demonstrated that mechanical efficiency—rather than purely innate talent—is a major factor in achieving virtuoso-level performance.

However, while this work provides valuable insights into picking mechanics, it does not significantly address two aspects of musical development that are central to this research:

  • the expansion of dynamic range

  • the development of harmonic sophistication

Research in music psychology suggests that dynamics and articulation are often among the last elements performers address when learning new material. Yet these elements are essential for expressive musical performance.
