Technical and Harmonic Approaches in Contemporary  Guitar:

Case Studies of Matteo Mancuso, Andre Nieri, and Oz Noy

Analytical study within a practice-based PhD research project.

Overview

This research investigates the right-hand picking techniques employed by three contemporary guitarists working primarily within jazz and fusion contexts: Matteo Mancuso, Andre Nieri, and Oz Noy.

The study examines how right-hand technical approaches influence harmonic language, intervallic design, and improvisational style in contemporary jazz guitar performance. Through detailed transcription and analysis, the research explores how these guitarists navigate complex melodic structures, wide intervallic movement, and advanced harmonic vocabulary.

The analysis forms part of a broader investigation into the development of an Integrated Guitar Technique System (IGTS) designed to expand technical facility and enable greater freedom in contemporary jazz improvisation.

Methodology

A multifaceted analytical approach was used consisting of three primary strands:

Technical Analysis

Examining right-hand picking patterns including:

  • alternate picking

  • hybrid picking

  • classical fingerstyle approaches

The analysis focuses on picking efficiency, directional changes in complex musical phrases, and the relationship between mechanical efficiency and musical output.

Harmonic Analysis

Investigating the harmonic implications of these technical approaches, including:

  • intervallic design

  • angular melodic contour

  • tension and release within improvised lines

This analysis explores how physical technique directly influences musical expression.

Phrase and Rhythmic Analysis

Examining rhythmic organisation within improvised lines, including:

  • subdivision groupings

  • phrase structure

  • rhythmic variation and contour

This stage of analysis investigates how technical approaches influence the rhythmic architecture of improvisational language.

Case Study 1

Matteo Mancuso

Matteo Mancuso has developed an innovative fingerstyle approach to electric guitar performance that draws heavily on classical guitar technique. His use of thumb–index–middle–ring (p–i–m–a) finger patterns allows for exceptional articulation, speed, and harmonic clarity (Zapala, 2024) .

Mancuso’s approach enables him to perform complex quartal harmonic structures and wide intervallic passages with fluidity. By employing classical fingerstyle planting techniques, he is able to avoid the technical constraints associated with alternate picking in passages requiring large string skips and angular melodic movement( Beato,2024).

A key advantage of this approach is the ability to circumvent what has been described as the “trapped-zone”(Grady,2022) problem, a technical limitation encountered in alternate picking when navigating the guitar’s predominantly fourth-based tuning system

Through finger placement across multiple strings in advance of execution, Mancuso is able to maintain fluid right-hand motion while articulating complex intervallic lines across a wide register.

His improvisation on the jazz standard “Donna Lee” demonstrates the integration of quartal harmony, enclosure techniques, and angular melodic contour within a modern improvisational language.

Case Study 2

Andre Nieri

Andre Nieri’s approach combines high-speed alternate picking with classical fingerstyle techniques, allowing him to navigate wide intervallic leaps and compound melodic structures with precision.

In contrast to conventional alternate picking, Nieri frequently abandons the pick in passages requiring:

  • large intervallic jumps

  • string skipping

  • compound arpeggio structures

Using a classical free-stroke fingerstyle technique, he is able to execute passages featuring wide intervallic displacement and extended harmonic structures.

This technique enables the articulation of complex melodic contours that would be technically inefficient using conventional alternate picking or sweep-picking approaches.

Case Study 3

Oz Noy

Oz Noy is widely recognised for his use of fast alternate picking combined with hybrid picking techniques.

His improvisational language frequently incorporates:

  • octave displacement

  • chromaticism

  • outside harmonic structures

These techniques create angular melodic shapes and harmonic tension that extend beyond traditional jazz vocabulary.

Noy’s use of octave displacement allows melodic material to move across large registers of the instrument, increasing both textural variation and harmonic ambiguity.

However, the extensive right-hand movement required in this approach can introduce mechanical tension and reduce picking efficiency in certain contexts.

Research Contribution

The analysis of these three performers demonstrates how right-hand technique directly shapes harmonic language, intervallic design, and improvisational vocabulary in contemporary jazz guitar performance.

The case studies highlight:

  • the expressive potential of classical fingerstyle techniques in electric guitar contexts

  • the role of hybrid picking in navigating complex intervallic structures

  • the relationship between technical efficiency and improvisational freedom

These insights informed the development of the Integrated Guitar Technique System (IGTS), which seeks to integrate elements of these approaches into a unified technical framework.

By reconfiguring traditional right-hand picking patterns, IGTS enables performers to navigate complex intervallic structures and angular melodic contours with greater efficiency and expressive control.
