Developing an Integrated Guitar Technique System for Contemporary Jazz Improvisation

Overview

Over the past fifty years, guitar technique has evolved rapidly, with innovations ranging from two-hand tapping to hybrid classical and percussive approaches. Despite these developments, alternate picking has remained largely unchanged.This research investigates the development of an Integrated Guitar Technique System (IGTS) designed to expand technical facility and enable greater freedom in jazz improvisation. The system integrates elements of sweep picking, banjo-influenced right-hand motion, and classical guitar technique to create a more efficient and versatile picking approach.The primary motivation for developing IGTS was to support an expanded harmonic vocabulary and enable more angular and intervallic melodic contouring in improvised performance.
